Meteorite Museum of Purple Mountain Observatory is officially open to the public

On the afternoon of August 27th, the Meteorite Museum of Purple Mountain Observatory is officially open to the public. 

The found of Meteorite Museum is proposed by Xu Weibiao, chief scientist of celestial chemistry and Planetary Science Laboratory. The meteorite lab of Purple Mountain Observatory, the enthusiastic collectors about meteorite, and the Science Popularizing department of Purple Mountain Observatory helped a lot in the process of building. 

More than 30 precious meteorites are on display this time, which are from China, Sweden, Argentina, Africa, Russia and other countries and regions. The exhibition will be at the Purple Mountain Observatory for a long time. 

Meteorites are celestial debris down through the atmosphere to the earth rock, are the precious rare physical specimen used by human to directly recognize about solar system. The types of meteorite on display contains stone meteorites, iron meteorites and stony iron meteorite, among which there are a particularly rare moon meteorite, Martian meteorite and the famous Russian Chelyabinsk meteorite, etc.
