Recently, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has released a list of new academicians in 2019. Prof. CHANG Jin, director of the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO) of CAS, was on the list. He has long been committed to the research of space detection technology and has made groundbreaking contributions. He is the chief scientist of China’s first astronomical satellite the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE, also known as Wukong).
His new method of high-energy electron and gamma-ray detection has been applied to DAMPE, and obtained the most precise cosmic-ray spectrum of electrons and positrons in TeV energy range all over the world. “The first direct detection of spectral break around 1 TeV of the electron cosmic ray spectrum by the Wukong” was elected as China’s top 10 scientific advances in 2018.
