On December 24th 2012, Prof. Alfons van Blaaderen from Utrecht University, the Netherlands visited Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, and gave a presentation entitled “Manipulating Complex Colloids with External (Electric) Fields”. He presented the recent achievements of his research group in quantitative 3D real-space analysis and the control of self-assembly (SA) behaviors of colloidal particles.

Alfons van Blaaderen is a Professor in Soft Condensed Matter Physics at Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He is the pioneer and continues to develop quantitative 3D real-space analysis by confocal microscopy of concentrated colloidal systems and processes. His research is at the borderline between chemistry, physics and materials science, is the use and development of new colloidal model systems (e.g. core-shell colloidal particles: spheres, rods, more complex shape) to study fundamental (soft) condensed matter physics. He received the Rhodia Prize from the European Colloid and Interface Science Society in 2006, and the Peter Debye Prize for his research on the borderline between Chemistry and Physics from the Edmond Hustinx foundation. He has published more than 140 papers in high ranking journals.
