International cooperation of Nanjing Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences has produced remarkable achievements and played a vital role in the scientific progress of research institutes of CAS Nanjing over the past years.

Nanjing Branch richens the form of international cooperation, promotes the development of newly emerging disciplines and enhances the level of scientific and technological innovation. By organizing large-scale international conferences and getting resources to support research and education work, global cooperation in science and technology is enhanced. Through effective cooperation with more than 20 countries and regions in science and technology, some newly emerging disciplines develop rapidly and some scientific research has great impact both at home and abroad. Nanjing Branch pays particular attention to the work of Chinese scientists in international academic organizations and more than 40 scientists of institutes of Nanjing Branch work there.

In 2017, the in-visit and out-visit of institutes of Nanjing Branch amounts to 615 and 11 international and bilateral meetings are held, providing platforms for scientists to know the latest research progress and to attract foreign experts to work in China. Besides, the funding of international cooperation in 2017 is more than 2,400 million, published scientific papers are more than 1,350, SCI and EI papers of which are over 800.

Outstanding young scientists are selected each year to have long-term study and collaborative research in developed countries. Meanwhile, foreign experts are actively recruited. Hundreds of foreign experts conduct collaborative research with institutes of Nanjing Branch each year. Especially in recent years, efforts are strengthened by institutes to introduce international team, the join of who further expand the field of scientific research and enhance the international level.

The main international cooperation achievements of Nanjing Branch lately are: Australia Ambassador to China MS Frances Adamson visited Nanjing branch and spoke highly of the cooperation between CAS and Australia. Purple Mountain Observatory found the universe peculiar new “species”—Super-Red galaxies in cooperation with Harvard-Smithsonian Astrophysical Research Center. Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology found coal-forming swamp forests buried by the volcanic eruption about 300 million years ago in coalfield of Inner Mongolia with University of Pennsylvania. Nanjing Soil Research Institute was established as the East Asian center of “global digital soil mapping plan” and the Asian Center of “global soil Partnership Program”. Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology have achieved important results on ecological system and its early signal mutation research in cooperation with University of Southampton and Wageningen University. Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics & Technology and CSUN of United States have made significant progress in “key technology of high contrast imaging and research on observation of extrasolar planet”. Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech and Nano-bionics had 5 international cooperation projects funded by Ministry of science and technology, Fund Committee and Suzhou city as a new institute. 1 “specially invited foreign experts plan” was enforced and 1 evaluation expert overseas was selected by Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology.
