On November 10-15, professor Sven Erik Jørgensen from University of Copenhagen who is also world-renowned ecologist, winner of Stockholm Water Award and the first winner of “Einstein Chair Professor” award granted by Chinese Academy of Sciences visited our institute at research fellow Hu Weiping’s invitation, and participated in the seminar taking “Model for Lake Environmental Management” as the topic. He also gave ecosystem modeling training to the participants. Over 70 related personnel from the units like Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hohai University, Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, Taihu Lake Basin Administration of Ministry of Water Resources participated in this seminar and modeling training.

The seminar held on November 11-12 was hosted by research fellow Hu Weiping from Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the beginning, professor Sven Erik Jørgensen gave a speech on “Integrated ecological - environmental management based on ecological modeling and ecological indicators” which emphasized the importance of ecological-environmental comprehensive management, and made systematic explanation on the seven steps of ecological-environmental comprehensive management by taking ecological modeling and ecological index as the entry point. After that, over 30 ecological environment experts like research fellow Hu Weiping of our institute, professor Chen Qiuwen from Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute gave keynote academic reports, and professor Sven Erik Jørgensen gave comments on them one by one. He also offered his own profession suggestions or opinions, and made deep discussion with related experts and scholars.

After the meeting, professor Sven Erik Jørgensen gave a ecological model training lasting 3 days. He first made full explanation on the aspects like how to build ecological model, systematic thought, key technology for building model and model operation implementation platform Stella. After that, he divided 24 trainees into 4 groups to make practical modeling operation. Professor Sven guided and helped every group’s trainees to complete the model’s design, building and operation. At last, every group showed the ecological model they built. Professor Sven Erik Jørgensen made deep discussion with everyone on their models and deepened their understanding on building ecological model.
