On April 15th, Invited by Professor  Sun-an Ding, Prof. Quanmin Guo from University of Birmingham visited SINANO and gave us an exciting report named “Magic Number (C60)mAun Hybrid Clusters”.

Prof. Guo’s research interest is focused on scanning tunneling microscopy, self-assembly and on-site chemical reaction on surface. In this report, Prof. Guo focused on the typical C60/Au(111) system, showing how to precisely control the size of (C60)mAun hybrid clusters. The smallest structure consisting of 7 C60 molecules and 19 Au atoms, stable up to 400 K, much higher than the one without Au atoms. And then Prof. Guo showed us how to manipulate the C60 molecules with STM tip and how the magic cluster formed. Prof. Guo’s wonderful work and academic report raised a heated discussion and deep reflection.

Prof. Guo now is vice director of the Nanoscale Physics Research Laboratory (NPRL) in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham, UK. He obtained Bachelor of Engineering in Tsinghua University from 1979 to 1984.He received PhD in Physics in Lancaster University from 1985 to 1989.He worked as Post doctoral Research Assistant in Chemistry Department, Liverpool University from 1989 to 1993.He worked as Post doctoral Research Associate, IRC in Surface Science, Liverpool University from 1993 to 1997.He worked as Post doctoral Research Associate,in Department of Chemistry, Salford University from 1997 to 1998.He worked as a lecturer in School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham from 1998 to 2003.He worked as a senior lecturer in School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham in October,2003.
